Watertown, Wis., no-tiller Tony Peirick has been adding conservation practices to his farm for many years now, having started no-tilling in 1994 and adding cover crops in 2004 as part of a local watershed project. He has since become a vocal advocate for soil health and in 2019 won the Conservation Farm Family of the Year award for the state of Wisconsin. A story about his practices appeared in No-Till Farmer’s August 2019 Conservation Tillage Guide and can also be found here.
Enjoy this short video showing his fields in several stages of growth, starting with emergent cereal rye in spring, the same rye a few months later, planting corn into living cereal rye, rolling terminated rye after planting, and sidedressing corn with the rye still serving as armor for the soil.
