No-Tillers Wasting Dollars with High Soybean Plant Populations

Ten years of results from Marion Calmer’s extensive on-farm research studies didn’t show any economic advantage for soybeans planted in late April or early May with plant populations of over 175,000 seeds per acre.

The no-tiller from Alpha, Ill., says this was true when 15-inch-row beans were either drilled or planted with either no-till or conventional tillage.

Properly Sizing Residue Essential When No-Tilling

Kevin Anderson says it’s essential to properly size residue at harvest. The veteran no-tiller and equipment manufacturer from Andover, S.D., says you must take the time to adjust your combine to effectively slice residue at the proper length.

Anderson says correctly sizing residue will improve seed-to-soil contact when no-tilling the following spring, lead to improved microbiological soil activity and provide you with more efficient fertilizer usage.
