The two careers that formed my life for the last 23 years started on the same day. A loan to purchase 320 acres adjacent to my family’s home farm, and an offer for a job as a local extension agronomist for Manitoba Agriculture, were mere hours apart.
Over the year, the two jobs have complemented each other very well. I’ve been able to relate to other farmers in their experiences and help facilitate research to bring no-till in my area to the next level.
While my father and grandfather had been practicing forms of conservation farming for years, my first real interest in no-till — or zero-till, as we prefer to call it here in Canada — was initially just part of my job.
As I was trying to build awareness and start the practice on my own farm, one of the early directors of the Manitoba-North Dakota Zero-Till Farmers Association told me to get involved with this organization because I would learn a lot more. He was right. And what was once a part of the job is now a passion.
