No-Tillers Gain Flexibility With New Crop Protection Products
Manufacturers are rolling out new insecticides, herbicides and fungicides with improved formulas and tankmix compatibility to help no-tillers reduce trips across the field and boost yields.
Another wave of new crop-protection products is expected to hit the U.S. market in time for the 2013 growing season, as no-tillers and strip-tillers look for ways to fend off resistant weeds and yield-robbing diseases and insects.
This year, many manufacturers of crop-protection products are touting their product’s alternate or secondary mode of action, a completely new technology, or tankmix compatibility that lets farmers reduce the number of trips across fields.
What follows is a list of new herbicides, fungicides and seed treatments compiled by No-Till Farmer that are available for 2013 or are expected to receive U.S. EPA registration in time for the coming growing season.
HERBICIDES
Enlist Duo
Enlist Duo, the herbicide component of the proposed Enlist Weed Control System, contains the active ingredients 2,4-D choline and glyphosate. Pending regulatory approvals, the expected label for Enlist Duo herbicide will allow application on Enlist 2,4-D-tolerant corn up to V8 stage or 30 inches in height.
Enlist Duo herbicide from Dow will provide two modes of action for broad-spectrum control of resistant and tough weeds. Data from 2011 field trials in the Midwest showed the Enlist system controlled major weed species, including glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth, waterhemp and giant ragweed.
The best overall weed control at the trials was achieved with a program approach, including a soil-applied, pre-emergence residual herbicide followed by Enlist herbicide.
This approach led to 99% control of glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth and 100% control of red root pigweed, glyphosate-resistant common ragweed, giant ragweed and glyphosate-resistant waterhemp in Enlist…
