On this edition of the Cover Crop Connection, associate editor Mackane Vogel pays a visit to Jay Baxter’s farm in Georgetown, Del. The no-tiller takes us to one of his fields and shows how multiple cover crops species, including hairy vetch, buckwheat and winter annuals, are helping his soils retain moisture during a dry stretch.
Alex Frasier remembers taking naps as a little kid in the tractor while his dad Jayme was driving around, working the field. Fast forward to 2024 and the Faulkton, S.D., no-tiller is working with his dad on the farm, interseeding cover crops into no-till soybeans with Jayme’s blessing.
This week we’re going to hear from USDA research agronomist Jose Franco as he discusses alternatives to only using cereal rye as a winter cover crop in the Upper Midwest. Some of these alternatives include triticale, hairy vetch and winter camelina.
Recently a no-tiller commented on a no-till history article about stripper headers and said “stripper headers make our no-till program work without having to plant covers. We are straight wheat on wheat and run cattle every year. We couldn't do it without the stripper header!”
Having worked in the conservation ag sector for 25+ years, director of Conservation Technology Information Center (CTIC), Ryan Heiniger, says that he has seen a lot of different types of cover crop/regenerative ag incentive and cost-share programs fail and succeed. But he feels that the current momentum around incentivizing conservation ag is bigger than it has ever been.
