Looking Ahead to 2021 with New Planting, Seeding Innovations

Bourgault, Fendt, Deere make noise with new models as engineers focus on efficiency, preventing compaction.

Pictured Above: HIGH TECH. Manufacturers such as Fendt (above), John Deere and Kinze continue to introduce planters designed to push the envelope on planting efficiency while also decreasing compaction, which is always a concern in no-till. Bourgault released technology allowing planting and drilling methods using the same machine

Even though fall harvest is just around the corner for no-tillers, it doesn’t mean planting and seeding time is over. In addition to winter crops that must still go in, getting cover crops planted well — and on time — is taking on much more importance.

During and after harvest is also an opportune time to analyze evidence of doubles, skips and other issues from this year’s planting. In other words, it’s never too early to start thinking about what might have been done better.

What follows is a roundup of some of the most recent innovations released by manufacturers for new planters, drills and air seeders, as well as attachments and other products designed to improve planting results.

Fendt Momentum Planter

AGCO introduced its Fendt Momentum planter. It is made up of three independent, “intelligent” sections that operate automatically, ensuring the row units on each section maintain the ideal seeding depth. The planter’s patented sensor-controlled hydraulic system monitors the angle of the row-unit parallel arms to automatically adjust toolbar height, keeping the arms level and the row units properly engaged with the soil as ground conditions and terrain change.

The vertical contouring toolbar flexes up and down as much as 65.9…
