Many no-tillers complain aerially seeded cover crops result in poor stands and don’t provide a consistent return on investment for what they’re spending. But after studying many of these stand failures for the last several years, Damon says there are strategies and methods no-tillers can employ to dramatically increase the chance of getting better stands.
He shares some important tips on assessing the results of aerial cover crop applications, including using measurables such as grain corn harvest date, residue distribution in no-tilled fields, and scouting for evidence of seed predation caused by earthworms and slugs.
In this episode of the No-Till Farmer podcast, brought to you by Calmer Corn Heads, we welcome Damon Reabe, aerial cover crop applicator and co-owner of Dairyland Aviation from Waupun, Wis., to explain the necessary steps to ensure a successful cover crop stand, including the best timing of application and what soils have the greatest success rate.
