Brian Freed applies herbicides to no-tilled corn and soybeans with a modified Spra-Coupe. The Lexington, Ill., no-tiller and crop consultant leaves the wings folded, removes the bracket from the back boom and adds a bracket on the sprayer’s backside that has spray lines running down each of 13 arms.

The nozzle is located along the boom on the downside so it’s protected from getting hit by leaves on the no-till corn or the weeds. Herbicide spray is angled down past a simple shoe (a 12-inch long piece of 1-inch wide strapping material). A 1 1/2-inch square tubing pivots on a bolt on top and there’s enough weight on the shoe to hold it down.

Located 8 to 12 inches above the ground, the nozzle’s 110-degree angle enables Freed to get good coverage across a 30-inch no-till corn row.

With knee-high no-tilled corn, he doesn’t spray more than 5 or 6 inches up the stalk. On taller corn, you could spray 10 or 12 inches up the stalk.
