Many growers looking for a new way to provide both burndown and season-long weed control will soon have a new tool available in their herbicide arsenal. That’s because a compound named Expert from Syngenta Crop Protection was recently approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in corn and grain sorghum.
Approval for the easy to use, all-in-one burndown herbicide with season-long residual control of both grass and broadleaf weeds is now being submitted for state registrations in a dozen Midwestern and Great Plains states.
This premix combination herbicide contains 2.14 pounds atrazine, 1.74 pounds S-metolachlor and 1 pound glyphosate per gallon. To provide a high level of crop safety in corn, the formulation also includes benoxacor. It can be applied up to 30 days before, during or after no-tilling corn or grain sorghum at recommended application rates ranging from 2.5 to 3.75 quarts per acre. However, it must be applied prior to emergence with non-Roundup Ready corn hybrids.
“Syngenta is excited to offer this new convenient all-in-one herbicide to our no-till and conservation tillage customers,” says Bill Buetke, brand manager for Expert. “Growers will now be able to save time and obtain burndown plus season-long grass and broadleaf weed control in a single pass without tankmixing.”
