Shop Talk: EPA Approval Given For New Paraquat Herbicide

A new formulation of paraquat herbicide from Syngenta Crop Protection has been registered by the Environmental Protection Agency. Syngenta says Gramoxone Inteon sets a higher industry standard for protection of users, provides control as effective as Gramoxone Max in burndown and harvest aid uses, and offers an effective alternative to glyphosate.

Syngenta is working to obtain the necessary state registrations, including California and New York.

Gramoxone Inteon reduces the risk of harm from accidental ingestion through a formulation based on alginates, natural, non-toxic products extracted from seaweed. Alginates help prevent the product from being absorbed into the body, thereby increasing time and efficacy for medical treatment. A vomit-inducing green dye further enhances the product safety profile.

A new, less offensive alerting agent than that in Gramoxone Max also distinguishes the product. It has a mild, “decaying grass” odor designed to warn the user against accidental ingestion.

Gramoxone Inteon offers contact control of a wide spectrum of broadleaf weeds, sedges and grasses. In field tests, Gramoxone Inteon provided control equal to that of Gramoxone Max when evaluating the weed control of 25 species, including horseweed, common ragweed and lambsquarter, according to Syngenta.

Syngenta says Gramoxone Inteon is an effective tool for glyphosate weed resistance management. By offering a burndown with a different mode of action, Gramoxone Inteon allows growers to reserve glyphosate applications for in-crop use.
