Best of the Web This Week is brought to you by TOTAL ACRE.
For growers motivated to improvement through change and technology, TOTAL ACRE is a 3-year program where hundreds of growers nationally learn from two of the highest-yielding farmers in the world, Randy Dowdy and David Hula. Each Total Acre grower benefits from four 2-day farm camps every year, a dynamic customized software system and a community support that extends well beyond the program.

Minnesota No-Tiller Builds Fertilizer Bander Unit from Spare Parts
In this video from the Minnesota NRCS, Matt Tiffany walks us through the innovative farm equipment that he uses to grow no-till and strip-till corn and soybeans with cover crops. Make sure to stick around until the end of the video to see the fertilizer bander unit he made from spare parts to use to place fertilizer about 3 inches deep for his no-till corn.
Advice Wanted: Running a No-Till Drill with Liquid Fertilizer
Mark Mortley is considering getting his first no-till drill, and he turned to the no-tillers on the John Deere Single Disk No-Till Drills And Air-Seeders Facebook group for some advice. He’s wondering about the logistics of running liquid fertilizer on the drill, compared to the dry he’s used to working with. Check out the advice he received, and share your thoughts if you have some advice for Mark.
Does Electrocuting Weeds Really Work?
In this article from AgWeb, University of Missouri Extension weed scientist Kevin Bradley explains what university research is finding out about the Weed Zapper, a weed electrocution implement used to mechanically kill herbicide-resistant weeds. The Weed Zapper could be an effective tool for no-tillers if the crop stage is right, according to Bradley. “You have to have a height differential between the crop and the weed in question,” he says. Bradley will talk about best weed control strategies for corn and soybeans at the 2023 National No-Tillage Conference Jan. 10-13 in St. Louis, Mo. Register now, and prepare your toughest weed control questions for him!
Why No-Till Is More Important Now Than Ever with Long-Time No-Tiller Jan Layman
Jan Layman, a no-tiller from Kenton, Ohio, and president of the Ohio No-Till Conference, explains why adopting no-till is more important now than ever on the Ohio Country Today newscast. We appreciate Jan’s work to spread the word about no-till — and the plug for the digital version of our magazine!
Wisconsin No-Tillers Receive Recognition for Demonstration Farm
Brothers Mark and Joe Van Asten, who no-till about 1,300 acres and run a 1,160-cow dairy operation in Northeast Wisconsin, received recognition from their local representatives for their demonstration farm. The farm showcases no-till fields, filter strips, a two-stage ditch and cover crops, as well as low-disturbance manure application practices. Read more about their efforts in this article from the NRCS.
