To Till or No-Till, That is The Question (Not Really)
You might — depending on the weather in your neck of the woods — be tired of looking at planters at the moment, but this video, posted on the Irrigation Farmer channel, does a good job of showing conditions in both tillage and no-till fields, and the interaction between planters and the soil. You might guess which side of this particular match-up we’re on, but this Arkansas River Valley farmer in Colorado works both types of field over the course of the 16-minute video, which includes a visit from the local Snack Burglar and striking footage of no-till planting in action.
It's Good To Be King
Dave Hula plays his cards close to his vest. The National Corn-Growers Association Annual Yield Contest opened for entries on May 2. Hula — who's twice broken 600 acres in his recorded yields — is great about talking through the rigorous process of applying for the contest, but when it comes to the specific methodology of his success, he's a little coy (or polite ... hard to tell, really). He still tells some neat stories about night-vision equipped relic hunters and discusses the theoretical limits of corn.
I Call Him Glypho For Short
Glyphosate is the omnipresent herbicide of no-till farming nowadays. But how well do you know it? How good is your water? Prices for the chemical are on the rise, so it might be worth remembering the tips and tricks that farmers employed to work around prices as high as 60 Canadian Dollars per liter ($174 per Gallon). Earlier this week, Thom Weir recapped some of the tips in a piece for the Canadian publication The Western Producer. Apart from checking your water, the big takeaway is that you should probably read your label.
Going Green
Curious about planting green? In 2019 demonstration farmer Rick Gehrke with the Upper Fox-Wolf Demonstration Farm Network in Wisconsin tested planting soybeans green in two different ways; planting first and then roller-crimping, and roller-crimping first and then planting. Gehrke says planting and then roller-crimping is ideal because it reduces the risk of having planter issues (like hairpinning) from the vegetation mat. However, you may consider roller-crimping first may be better if you plan on running the crimper on a front three point, or you want extra wheel traffic on top of the cover mat.
New No-Till In The Ukraine
Amid upheaval and war in Ukraine this year, Ukrainian Farmer YouTuber Vitalii has decided to add one more change to the roster: he's switching to no-till. He also says he's sending half of his YouTube money to the Ukrainian Army.

Make Spraying Fun!
Today's complex chemical mixtures usually have a combination of bulk, jugs, and dry products. The high value products usually come in small packages. Mixmate is the only system designed to measure and process these products quickly. Jugs are processed in about 12 seconds. The Mixmate Fusion has a high flow rate rinsing system to ease dry product measurement and induction. This makes mixing on demand a breeze!
