Transitioning from harvesting crops using a combine to only using cattle is not an easy task, says CJ Blew, a cattle rancher from Castleton, Kan. His family’s 24,000-acre cow-calf operation has improved cattle health and performance since switching 3,000 acres of irrigated dryland cropland to paddocks for grazing cover crops.

Grazing cattle on cover crops can be a profitable choice for growers, as explained by Olivia Amundson, a Cow-Calf Field Specialist with South Dakota State University. During Amundson’s presentation, she will discuss how grazing covers can decrease variable feed costs, which are the biggest expense in raising cattle. However, not all cover crops are created equally, so Amundson will dissect which covers can give cover crop users and livestock producers the most bang for their buck.

These two presenters will be sharing information on how to profitably graze cattle on cover crops at the 2021 Fall National Cover Crop Summit on November 16-17.
