The NASS and the Natural Resources Conservation Service surveyed about 34,000 producers between May and September 2022. Of that number, about 84% said they had implemented conservation tillage practices, the second-highest reported conservation practice.
The Census of Agriculture is designed to be a complete count of U.S. farms, ranches, and operators. The agency defines a farm as anywhere $1,000 or more of fruit, vegetables or food animals are raised or sold.
As of May 22, 79% of corn has been planted in 18 states that account for 92 percent of corn production in the U.S. The 79% is near the average from 1980 through 2010.
U.S. farmers plan to plant 3.99 million (4.5 percent) more corn acres, 3.89 million (8.2 percent) more wheat acres, and 1.59 million (15 percent) more cotton acres than last year.
USDA's NASS released the quarterly Grain Stocks report, showing corn stocks in all positions at 6.52 billion bushels as of March 1, down 15% from last year.
