This week’s edition of Dryland No-Tiller seems to illustrate that it’s never too late for no-tillers to explore new options that can improve the diversity of their farm operations and increase profitability.

Recently I spent some time driving east from Oklahoma to southeastern Missouri to visit some farmers in the Delta region for our magazine. I’ve heard of some soil erosion problems occurring in the Delta, which includes the Bootheel region of southeastern Missouri where corn, popcorn, cotton, soybeans and wheat are popular.

It’s certainly great to see how far soil-moisture profiles have come across the Great Plains over the past year. Looking at the U.S. Drought Monitor, you don’t see a sea of brown and red colors that the government uses to signify severe major drought problems.

Earlier this month, about 170 people attended the Farming Evolution no-till conference in Holyoke, Colo., where attendees covered a number of topics related to no-till practices, cover cropping and soil health principles.

Although horseweed can be controlled well with traditional auxin herbicides like 2,4-D or dicamba, Oklahoma State University has been exploring additional options that could increase the sustainability of auxin products for the future.
