Last Saturday morning, while working on the April No-Till Farmer installment in the YOUR NO-TILL HISTORY series, I came across yet another very personal story about Kentucky’s Harry M. While the “original” events in Hawaii were discontinued in 1980, we’d considered producing an event like the National No-Tillage Conference (NNTC) for years. But we always had more than we could handle in getting our magazines, newsletters and books out the door. The No-Till History series is made possible by Calmer Corn Heads.

The 2022 farm season has several important no-till milestones — no-till’s first commercial plot (60 years), No-Till Farmer (50) and National No-Tillage Conference (30). We’ll add a fourth jewel to the “no-till crown” with the 40th anniversary of a public-private partnership, the Conservation Tillage Information Center (CTIC). The frequency of no-till in published citations began rising in the early 1970s (likely coinciding with the seminal Harry Young & Shirley Phillips book,  No-Tillage Farming) and peaking in 1982 before rising again for a brief period again in the early 1990s.
