As we get into May, a reminder is in order about possible slug problems in no-till crops, especially in fields with a history of slug issues.

Crop growers should take extra precautions to scout their fields this spring for slugs to try to get control of these plant feeders before they attack corn and soybean plants and cause feeding injury, an Ohio State University Extension entomologist said.

There are no major insect pests of soybean seedlings, but occasionally we do run into problems. Some folks use an insecticidal seed treatment in soybeans. While these products are effective to kill insects, they will not provide a yield benefit.

Apparently, the switch to cool, rainy weather in some states this spring after a balmy March didn’t do no-tillers a favor.

If you have been no tilling for some time here are some considerations that may improve your no till system.

Slug activity is picking up, particularly in portions of the Midwest receiving regular rains.

With cooler temperatures this fall, slugs seem to be feeding incessantly, attacking newly planted cover crops and fall-planted small grains. Slugs are most often problematic in no-till systems and thrive in high-moisture, high-residue fields.
