With Australian no-tillers dealing with some of the worst weed resistance issues in the world, the country’s growers are adopting a “zero tolerance policy” or a “take no prisoners” approach to weed control.

Seeking to better understand herbicide resistance, researchers exposed more than 70 million grain amaranth seeds to a soil-based herbicide. Though preliminary, the findings suggest that the mutation rate in amaranth is very low, and that low-level herbicide application contributes little — if anything — to the onset of new mutations conferring resistance, say researchers at the University of Illinois.

Because of serious weed concerns with the area’s over 10 million acres of wheat and barley grown with extremely limited rainfall, Western Australia is the herbicide-resistance capital of the world.
