Dow AgroSciences announced today that federal registration has been received for Instinct nitrogen stabilizer for use with UAN and liquid manure.

"Instinct is proven technology in an innovative, encapsulated formulation from Dow AgroSciences, which has been the leader in nitrogen stabilization for more than 35 years," says Andrew Simeonidis, senior marketing specialist for Dow AgroSciences. "Instinct gives growers confidence that they are effectively protecting their UAN and liquid manure applications at the plant root zone."

Instinct keeps nitrogen available to corn during key yield-determining growth stages. Studies also show that nitrapyrin, the active ingredient in Instinct, optimizes the yield potential of corn by increasing grain protein, improving standability, reducing the risk of stalk rot and enabling faster crop drydown.

Under a 24(c) Special Local Needs Registration in Iowa in 2008, on-farm field trials showed that fields treated with Instinct outyielded nontreated fields by an average of 5 bushels per acre. Instinct supports environmentally beneficial farming practices by reducing nitrogen leaching into groundwater and reducing denitrification, the escape of nitrogen into the atmosphere.

"In other words, Instinct keeps nitrogen where it belongs — in the soil," says Chris Berry, market development specialist with Dow AgroSciences.

Berry adds that as an encapsulated product, Instinct can remain on the soil surface for up to 10 days, giving growers maximum flexibility in application timing.

"Instinct is designed to stay on the soil surface without volatilizing until the nitrogen can be incorporated into the ground either with a 0.5 inch of rain or mechanical incorporation," Berry says.

In addition, Instinct is easy to handle, noncorrosive and requires no special application equipment.

"Instinct allows growers to apply the right amount of UAN or liquid manure and easily protect it from loss," Simeonidis says.
