What are you currently doing, or have you done, to help break down residue more effectively ahead of no-tilling spring crops?

A: “In 20-inch rows I added narrow-profile Yetter SharkTooth row cleaners this year and next year I plan to add Precision Planting’s CleanSweep technology to the row cleaners to adjust them on the go and not move as much soil and more of just the residue.

“I also plan to add Precision Planting’s DeltaForce system for more proper down force while planting, to help penetrate the residue profile and cereal rye cover crop while maintaining proper planting depth, with better seed-to soil-contact.”

— Craig Lamoureux, Storm Lake, Iowa

A: “I have been in continuous no-till for 18 years and using cover crops for 10 years, and residue has never really been a problem for me. I utilize cover crops after my row crops and plant when the ground is fit to plant. I go through my planter very thoroughly in the early spring and replace what needs replacing, and I keep my disc openers sharp and properly spaced to aid in cutting the residue.”

— Max Martin, Loving, Texas

A: “We use Calmer BT Choppers on our corn head along with Yetter Devastator stalk rollers, and that helped a lot. We’re now using cereal rye on most acres and seed that with a Great Plains no-till drill with no-till coulters. This all helps get residue more in contact with the soil for faster breakdown.”

— Myron Sylling, Spring Grove, Minn.
