New Tools to Fight Off Weeds, Insects and Diseases

Manufacturers unveil insecticides, herbicides and fungicides — some in novel combinations and applications — to help protect yields and profits.

Faced with commodity prices that mirror cost-of-production figures and continued challenges from resistant weeds, no-tillers continue to seek out crop protectants that offer flexibility in application and dependable performance.

For 2016, growers have several new and improved crop protection products designed to help them fight competition from weeds, insects and disease from the time of planting to well beyond stand emergence.

This year’s “crop protection toolbox” includes the following herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and seed treatments compiled by No-Till Farmer editors and are available for 2016, or are expected to receive EPA registration in time for the upcoming growing season.

Arysta LifeScience says its Zolera FX systemic fungicide is a combination of full-rate fluoxastrobin and tetraconazole for corn and soybeans.

With both foliar and soil uptake, Zolera FX enters the plant through leaves, stems and roots and provides broad-spectrum disease control and increased yields in both crops.

The new product controls frogeye leaf spot, cercospora blight and Asian soybean rust in soybeans, and provides an effective tool to manage white mold when used in an integrated management strategy.

When Zolera FX is applied in corn it provides greater disease resistance, stress tolerance and improved water utilization, the company says.
