OVERCOME WET, COLD SOIL CONCERNS. While strip-till has worked for many readers, others arenâ??t totally sold on the idea of working their soils with another trip in fall after harvest.

Check Fall Stripping Pros, Cons

The lists are long when it comes to why you should and shouldn’t fall strip-till.

During last winter's seventh annual National No-Tillage Conference in St. Louis, we asked attendees to share their views on fall strip-tilling.

While some farmers and educators maintain fall strip-tilling can help overcome the wet, cold soil conditions faced by no-tillers in the spring, there was no solid agreement among conference attendees as to whether it’s a good way to push up no-till profits.

The survey indicated that 20 percent of conference attendees strip-till to overcome soil concerns while 80 percent do not.

Looking ahead, 22 percent expect to be strip-tilling by the year 2001. Some 40 percent don’t expect to strip-till two years from now and 38 percent aren’t sure.

For more on key strip-tilling benefits from Ohio and Indiana no-tillers who make the technique work, turn to pages 10 and 11 in this expanded issue of No-Till Farmer.
