Here are my thoughts on recently asked questions by No-Till Farmer readers. Remember that your particular farming circumstances may result in entirely different answers to these particular concerns which were voiced by readers.
Q: I have no-tilled corn and soybeans for 3 years and have been very satisfied with the results. We have pulled soil samples on 2-acre grids. When the soil samples came back, they indicated that we needed to apply up to 5 tons of lime per acre. Should I go back to tillage to thoroughly mix the soil and lime together?
A: If you are satisfied with no-till, then don’t change. With 3 years of no-till, you are just getting everything working effectively. I don’t understand why when farmers see grid soil tests with large ranges in lime recommendations that they think that they need to go back to conventional tillage.
I would put on 3 tons of lime where needed, wait 2 years and apply 2 tons where you did not get enough applied the first time.
Don’t use tillage to incorporate lime into the soil. I had one rented farm where I applied 3 tons per acre of lime in one shot and did not have any adverse effects. Lime works its way slowly through the soil profile.
Q: I’ve heard about a no-tiller in Kansas planting soybeans in standing wheat in late April. Has this been tried in the Corn Belt?
