Q: There was an article in No-Till Farmer (pages 8 and 9 in the June 2000 issue) about using heave limiters with openers on a no-till drill. I have a 30-foot Great Plains no-till drill and think these gadgets would be helpful. Sunflower makes these accessories and I ordered three to try in double-crop soybeans.

The article indicated they had to be slightly modified for a Great Plains drill. The bolt holding the opener is too short and the angle setting device has a hex hole that’s too big. How can I deal with that and are there any other gliches?

A: Drill a hole directly below the current hole as close to the other hole as possible. If you drill the hole too far below the current hole, the disc hub will run on the heave limiter and you’ll need to grind a groove in it. Use a 5/8 by 1…
