At the eighth annual National No-Tillage Conference in Des Moines, Iowa, conference co-sponsors revealed the latest products available for controlling insects in no-till corn.

American Cyanamid

While Counter has been around for 17 years, Dennis Belcher says it continues to offer broad-spectrum insect control with no-tilled corn.

“It’s very good on things like corn root worms and some of the seed-attacking pests,” he says. “Counter is very good either banded or in the furrow.”

While Belcher admits Counter does not completely control nematodes, he recommends every farmer who suspects nematodes to take the test to beat the pest.

“I don’t think every field out there has the problem, but it’ll be the best $20 you’ve ever spent, because it’ll tell you if you have a problem or not and give you peace of mind,” he says.

Zeneca

“If you have a lot of major insects in your corn, you should use Force. It’s as simple as that,” says Caydee Savinelli.

Force, a soil-applied insecticide, works well with no-till situations and does well with a larger amount of insects like corn rootworm, wireworm, corn seed maggots and grubs.

“But if cutworm is your only insect problem, we recommend using Warrior T which can be applied with your herbicide before planting. It gives you a long period of control,” she says.
