New Ideas For Handling No-Till Corn Insects

Controlling corn rootworm is still a major concern for no-tillers.

Several new label uses and new insecticides came in for special attention at the recent National No-Tillage Conference in Indianapolis, Ind.

Force 3G

Dane Bowers, says rootworms have become much more of a problem in recent years, even in first-year no-tilled corn. The technical support representative for Syngenta Crop Protection in Kokomo, Ind., says Force 3G is an excellent product for both rootworm and cutworm control along with being a safe product to handle and use.

“An added benefit is that you can come back with any type of chemistry over the top of your no-tilled corn without worrying about any interactions between the insecticide and herbicides,” he says.

Warrior

With cutworms in no-till corn, Bowers says a good product to use is Warrior liquid insecticide. Use it at a rate of 2 1/2 ounces per acre and mix with your no-till pre-emergence corn herbicides to control any anticipated cutworm activity, he advises.

Baytheorid

At Bayer CropScience, David Lamore says this insecticide is now labeled for corn after years of being used on alfalfa and cotton. “It offers good control on most insects that you will find in no-till corn production,” says the senior technical service representative from Bryan, Ohio. “This product also has a slightly longer residual than some other insecticides and the field re-entry interval is only 12 hours. This product also costs less per acre than many other products.”

Aztec

Lamore says this insecticide doesn’t have any herbicide limitations and offers good rootworm control in no-tilled corn.
