Check New Ideas For Boosting No-Till Performance

These two attachments may help you boost emergence under tough no-till conditions.

If you’re looking for new ways to improve no-till seeding performance, check out the new Thompson closing wheel from Exapta Solutions. The company’s officials indicate this closing wheel offers superb furrow closing, ultra-low mud adhesion and unmatched durability when no-tilling.

Featuring a thin-edge profile and carefully crafted spoke geometry, the unit creates a unique slicing and crumbling action during furrow closing that results in less breakdown of the seed trench sidewall. Its high-carbon, heat-treated tapered spokes feature a narrow profile that creates the optimum balance of aggressive sidewall breakage while limiting the working depth.

The Thompson wheel features rugged all-steel conditions, massive bearings with a triple-lip seal and an extended bearing shroud for even longer bearing life. In fact, the bearings are guaranteed for 3 years.

“The Thompson wheels are a little more aggressive, but we had no disturbance of seed placement even in sandy soils,” says Ron Jacques, a previous National No-Tillage Conference speaker from Hutchinson, Kan. “The Thompson wheels certainly don’t pick up mud like the May-Wes wheels did with our White 6000 no-till planter.”

Chad Wall didn’t realize that the seed furrow could be closed so well with his John Deere 1860 no-till drill until he installed the Hagny closing system, Thompson wheels and SDX firming wheels. “It made a night and day difference on cotton emergence, as we had been disappointed with this drill’s performance,” says the Plains, Texas, grower.
