Making the rounds of exhibitors at the late August Farm Progress Show in Iowa, No-Till Farmer editors spotted a number of products from shortline manufacturers that may work in your operation.
Schaffert’s new Ferta-Placer mounts 2 inches to the side and behind no-till planter or drill press wheels. Designed for use with high rates of nitrogen or hot starter mixes, an adjustable spring cushion helps maintain uniform soil contact.
The easy-to-install units feature a replaceable, high-chrome knife insert for longer life, and powder coated metal and high-molecular poly to resist fertilizer corrosion and wear. They can be pinned up when not in use and don’t require you to crawl under the planter to make adjustments.
With the units, there’s no mud buildup on the gauge wheels, no side pressure on planter joints, no bearings to wear out and no seedbed disturbance.

The B-33 mole knife from Hi-Pro Manufacturing can now be quickly adjusted for more efficient use when strip-tilling or sidedressing nitrogen in no-tilled corn. Herb Stam, who invented the knife, says a special notched design lets you adjust the pitch of the knife in 2 minutes. The Wateska, Ill., resident and former No-Till Innovator Award winner says the new forward pitch that offers 1/2 inch greater depth will allow growers to use the knives in both spring and fall under changing no-till conditions.
