Planning New No-Till Corn Pest Control Strategies

Tech service reps from Bayer CropScience and Syngenta Crop outline what you can do differently in 2006 to boost the return on your pest control investment.

When it comes to controlling pests in your no-tilled crops, there are a number of new options to carefully consider this year.

During the early January National No-Tillage Conference in St. Louis, staffers from both Bayer CropScience and Syngenta Crop Protection alerted attendees to the latest pest control remedies for no-tilled corn.

No-Till Corn Weed Control

Mike Weber says Bayer’s Radius one-pass, pre-emergence weed control concept will grow in popularity because it offers improved application timeliness and flexibility.

Featuring two modes of action, it provides season-long control of both grass and tough broadleaf weeds. Just 1/2 inch of rain will recharge Radius for control of late-season grass and broadleaf escapes that are up to 2 inches tall.

“When combined with as little as 1 percent crop oil, Radius will effectively burn down weeds up to 2 inches tall and provide lasting residue weed control,” says the Bayer CropScience senior technical service representative from Indianola, Iowa.

Offering expanded safener technology for enhanced crop safety, Option will control all major grasses and several key broadleaf weeds in a post-emergence application with no-till corn, Weber says. It offers a wide application window from V1 through V6, works with nearly all corn hybrids and offers favorable rotation options to any other crop within 60 days of application.

He says Option works well in a weed control tankmix with MSO to increase post-emergence herbicide activity with Syngenta’s Callisto herbicide. It can reduce bleaching concerns that sometimes occur with use of Callisto alone and also works…
