Having invested in the latest sprayer technologies, cereal grain growers are gearing up to do a better job of applying pesticides — starting this fall with winter wheat.

During last winter’s 14th annual National No-Tillage Conference, representatives from Bayer CropScience and Syngenta Crop Protection updated attendees on the latest pest control ideas for no-tilled wheat.

NO-TILL WHEAT INSECT CONTROL

Daren Bohannan, senior technical service representative for Bayer CropScience at Athens, Ill., says a new label for Baythroid will provide additional insect protection along with Sevin and Di-Syston insecticides.

Offering control of pythium damping off and dwarf bunt, Dividend Extreme protects against a number of early-season and soil-borne diseases in no-tilled wheat. Leon Hunger, technical support representative for Syngenta Crop Protection at Belleville, Ill., says this offers a step up in wheat seed protection and helps get wheat plants off to a healthy start while maximizing yield potential.

Containing three times the normal amount of Apron XL, Dividend Extreme offers the most protection for optimal root growth without the need to apply other fungicides. It also offers root rot suppression and crop safety even at twice the recommended application rate.

Hunter says Cruiser is effective at reducing wheat plant stress even when applied at low rates. Providing needed seed safety, it works under variable weather conditions and offers broad-spectrum protection against seed, soil, foliar chewing and sucking insects.
