No-Till Drought Mitigation Strategies For Operational Resilience
Throughout the Midwest, drought conditions are putting strain on yield potential early this year. In this article, read about some strategies that can help ensure that your crops won’t suffer from the drought and hear about other strategies discussed at Mitchell Hora’s recent Topsoil Summit event in Iowa.
Dry conditions in some parts of the Midwest are putting a strain on yield potential early this season. But some stands are thriving. Practices such as continuous covers and no-till are making the difference, says Jimmy Emmons, the author, far left. Photo by: Trust In Food
Indiana No-Tiller Conditions Soil with No-Till, Cover Crops
In this video from Indiana Corn, Susan Brocksmith of PE Brocksmith and Son Farm in Vincennes, Ind., talks about her no-till operation, which species of cover crops have worked best for her and why it’s so important to look for earthworms.
No-Till Winter Wheat Harvest
Watch as this multi-generational Kentucky farming family, which has been no-tilling for over 40 years, starts harvesting their 2023 winter wheat crop. They use a John Deere s780 tracked combine and John Deere 40-foot flex Draper header for harvest.
“Soil like a Sponge” in No-Till Field
Check out this photo that was posted to Twitter by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. This particular soil from Hamlin County, South Dakota has essentially no runoff even after 3 or 4 inches of rain.
“With no-till, our soils are like a sponge. There used to be some gullies, but not anymore. A three-inch rain will soak into our no-tilled fields.” https://t.co/UwJ0CgsGvy #soilhealth pic.twitter.com/yUek2f4RlJ
