No-Tiller Shares Advice for Planting Green
Tony Peirick, a Watertown, Wis., no-tiller and chairman of the farmer-led Dodge County Farmers for Health Soils and Healthy Waters, shares his experience and advice on planting green in this episode of the Soil + Water: Conservation Conversations podcast. “Cereal rye is a foolproof system to get your crops planted,” he says. “Cereal rye and cover crops keep your soil more resilient and help survive the wet conditions by having roots in the ground and more biology.”
How Planting Depth Affects Corn Emergence
In this YouTube video, Pioneer Field Agronomist Paul Yoder explains how planting depth can cause uneven emergence and how to make planter adjustments if you find variability in your planting depth.
Brandt: Delay Planting, Cover Crop Termination to Avoid Slug Issues
No-Till Legend Dave Brandt tells Ohio’s Country Journal that his long-term no-till and cover-cropped fields in Fairfield County, Ohio, used to be the “slug capital of the world” in the 1980s, but he’s learned some tricks over the years to keep the pests at bay, including waiting until the soil warms up to plant corn. “If you can plant that corn when the soil is warm (55 or 56 degrees), it comes up in 3-4 days, and the plants will outgrow the slugs.”
No-Tillers Offer Advice for Planting Milo into Stripper Stubble
The operations manager of Lathem Farms in Dalhart, Texas, posted this photo to Twitter and asked no-tillers for their advice about how to plant into the thick stripper stubble. The question got 51 responses and a variety of opinions about row cleaners.

Tilled vs. No-Tilled Soil Experiment Immediately Reveals Healthiest Soil
Noah Sanders of Redeeming the Dirt gives a side-by-side demonstration of the noticeable differences between a dirt clod from a tilled field and a dirt clod from a no-till field. Similar to the rainfall simulators you’ve likely seen at field days, it’s immediately clear which soil is healthier.
