Modifying White 5100 No-Till Corn Planter From Wide to Narrow Rows
Back Farms finally obtained a White 5100 no-till corn planter, but like most things, it needs some work. Check out this video where he explains why he wanted this particular planter and the work ahead to modify it from wide to narrow rows.
Five-Time Corn Yield Champion Plants with End Goal in Mind
Jeff Koelzer of Onaga, Kan., recently won the Kansas Corn Yield Contest for the 5th year in a row with a yield of 308.96 bushels. Koelzer tells Farm Progress that he considers his operation no-till, although he’ll use strip-till every other year to disk in anhydrous about 4-6 inches deep to get fertilizer down to the root zone in his clay soils.
No-Till Drill Slides Trying to Farm Steep Slopes of Pacific Northwest
We listened to no-tiller Russ Zenner of Genesee, Idaho, talk about no-tilling ground with a 40% slope in a recent No-Till Farmer podcast, and this YouTube video from Jacob Stueckle puts equipment challenges posed by the slopes of the Palouse into perspective. This is some extreme no-tilling!
Using Cover Crops with Organic No-Till
This webinar from the Rodale Institute examines the use of cover crops in no-till organic production in the Midwest. Among the research findings are that dry beans no-tilled into roller-crimped rye retained more soil water during the growing season.
H.H. Bennett Quotes to Fire Up Farmers about Saving the Soil
North Carolina no-tiller Jerry Cox shared this list of H.H. Bennett quotes with us, and it quickly grabbed a Best of the Web spot this week. Bennett is known as the father of soil conservation and the first chief of the Soil Conservation Service. One of our favorites is this quote handpicked for the second edition of the From Maverick to Mainstream: A History of No-Till Farming: “The writer, after 24 years spent in studying the soils of the United States, is of the opinion that soil erosion is the biggest problem confronting the farmers of the Nation over a tremendous part of its agricultural lands.”
