Occasional Tillage Just Not a Good Option

Most no-tillers won’t want to hear it, but some University of Nebraska research indicates an occasional limited tillage pass won’t seriously damage no-till’s favorable soil structure. But with herbicide costs increasing significantly this year, we’ve heard that a few no-tillers are thinking of using a light tillage pass as a weed control option.

Growing Food for Crops and Cows with Covers

Minnesota no-tiller Ben Dwire focuses on crop rotation to feed flora and fauna, conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

    What I've Learned from No-Tilling

Record Yields and High Prices Reward Iowa Family on No-Till Journey

An ongoing journey of continuously reducing tillage hasn’t held back the Hellands, who press forward even when they hit bumps.

University Researchers Battle Over No-Till ‘Fad’

Late Allis-Chalmers’ marketing exec recalls the opposition no-till faced as its champions tried to gain ground in the practice’s adoption.

Having spent 39 years in the farm equipment industry, I was fully aware of the fact that new machines aren’t unanimously accepted everywhere immediately. The land institute's nearly 20-year-old breeding program with intermediate wheatgrass is on track to perfect a no-tiller’s “dream come true” — a cool season perennial that can be managed for both winter grazing and a grain crop the following summer.

Women Landowners Arm for Conservation Push

Growing number of women landowners seek role in land operational decisions, helped by federally funded outreach programs.

    Ruth Rabinowitz had a problem.
The long-time professional wedding photographer inherited hundreds of acres of fertile farmland in Iowa and South Dakota from her deceased father, David Rabinowitz, a Great Depression-era doctor, who invested heavily in Iowa farmland between 1978 and the mid 1990s.
