Fertility needs for high-yielding corn may be outdated for modern high-yielding hybrids. Fred Below and research assistant Ross Bender of the University of Illinois conducted a series of research trials to determine the quantities of macro- and micronutrients needed to produce 230-bushel corn.
Data show that all nutrients are not acquired at the same time or used in the same way by a growing corn crop to produce grain, Below says. Despite many complexities of managing soil and plant nutrients, the plant physiologist discusses how improved fertilizer use can be achieved by understanding patterns of nutrient uptake, partitioning and utilization.
