Many farmers are using rotational no-tillage — a year or two of no-tillage alternated with tillage — to address concerns with soil compaction, weed control, diseases and
pests, nutrient availability or the ever-popular adaptation of crops to no-tillage. Sjoerd Duiker says that research on the benefits of no-tillage shows, however, that the soil-improvement benefits of no-tillage takes years to realize and can be obliterated by one tillage event.

The Penn State University soils specialist provides insight into how farm soils adapt to the change from tillage to no-tillage and will offer up a number of practical ways to make continuous no-till a reality. Duiker’s tips will even be good for continuous no-tillers looking to improve their no-tillage system.
