With the onset of Bt stalks, no-till corn on corn, narrower rows, higher populations and fungicide applications, turning corn-stalk residue into humus and organic matter requires a strategy that starts at the corn head, Marion Calmer says.

The Alpha, Ill., no-tiller will discuss the differences between knife-to-knife stalk rolls and stalk rolls where the flutes overlap and intermesh, the pros and cons of shredder heads, stubble damage to tires, stalk stompers, drag bars and stalk knockers. Calmer will also discuss strategies like fall strip-till, deep-ripping or surface-till, planter attachments and nitrogen applications that can help maintain a mat of residue that’s an asset rather than a mattress of liability.
