Whatever you think of “climate change,” there’s no denying that high-rainfall events, particularly in the spring, and prolonged summer dry periods seem to be the new normal and are having an impact on farming today. Ray McCormick says that too often, it seems there is either too much water or not enough water. Managing water and moderating water levels is where it’s at today for no-tillers, he says.
The Vincennes, Ind., no-tiller says water infiltration and water-holding capacity are possibly two of the most important processes you need to manage on your no-till farm. He’ll look at what can be done to move water off your fields in the spring to improve planting conditions without leaving your neighbors downstream with a major problem, yet make every effort to store some of that water in your soil so it’s available to crops when the weather turns dry.
