With advancements in genetic improvement of crops, yields have been generally been on the increase during the past decade. However, with this increase in genetic potential comes the need for more nutrients to support higher yield levels, says Barney Gordon.
The former Kansas State University fertility specialist says large amounts of surface residue present in no-till systems can reduce seed zone temperatures, which may inhibit root growth and make nutrient uptake more difficult. Gordon will discuss the effectiveness of banded applications of phosphorus and potassium in the fall or spring, the use of starter fertilizers and other practices that can provide plants adequate nutrition and support higher yields.
