Fertilizer management can be a significant challenge in no-till crop production. For example, in high-residue situations, as much as 40% of surface-applied urea can be lost to volatilization. Once fertilizer has moved into the soil, denitrification and leaching can result in significant loss of nitrogen.

Greg Schwab, agronomist for Koch Agronomic Services, will review the “4Rs” concept of right source, right time, right place and right rate and how it can be coupled with fertilizer technologies like urease inhibitors, nitrification inhibitors and polymer-coated urea to maximize nutrient-use efficiency.
