More than 35 years ago, David Brandt began the process of trying to increase corn yields by producing more nitrogen when he planted hairy vetch and winter peas as a cover crop. Today, the Carroll, Ohio, no-tiller has realized the improvements he began making to soil health 4 decades ago have led him to reduce his applied fertilizer inputs.

Brandt will share the best practices with cover crops that have allowed him to go from 170 pounds of nitrogen on fields with no cover to as low as 20 pounds per acre on fields where soil health has improved dramatically with long-term use of cover crops. He will share the benefits of hairy vetch, Austrian winter peas, cow peas and sunn hemp to supplement nitrogen, and why he uses at least two species of cover crops in each field.
