The theme of Kansas Rural Center's 2015 Farm & Food Conference is "Roots, Shoots and Boots: Healthy Farms and Health People from the Ground Up." The two-day conference will be held Nov. 13-14 at the Four Points by Sheraton in Manhattan, Kan.
The first day will be a soil health forum focusing on the nexus between cover crops, no-till and organic systems. Featured speakers include Jeff Moyer, executive director of the Rodale Institute and world renowned authority in organic agriculture, and Klaas Martens, who operates Lakeview Organic Grain and farms 1,400 acres of certified organic crops. The forum will include sessions on soil health and organic farming, organic no-till and opportunities in organics, Kansas-based cover crop and soil health research, and a farmer panel to discuss real-life experiences and challenges in building soil health and creating successful farms.
The second day of the conference will feature keynote speaker David Hunt, a nationally recognized teacher and leader in organizing for social change.
Breakout sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including adding livestock to your operation, season extension, pollinator habitat on the farm, adding honeybees to your operation, making a living on a small-scale farm, pesticide drift, carbon sequestration and more.
