The Iowa Learning Farms will host a cover crop field day at the Sam and Julie Spellman farm in Woodward, Iowa.
Sam Spellman, Dallas County Soil and Water Conservation District commissioner, is using no-till and cover crops on his highly erodible ground. For the last 4 years he's seeded cereal rye and cover crop mixes, including cereal rye or oats with radish and red clover to protect the soil from erosion and begin to rebuild soil organic matter. Attendees will see a field where both mixtures were aerially seeded the first week of September.
The field day will take place at the field located at 29002 180th St. and a complimentary meal will be served at 28923 190th St., one mile south of the field following the program. In case of unfavorable weather, the program will take place at the meal location.
The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are recommended to ensure adequate space and food. To RSVP, contact Liz Juchems at 515-294-5429 or ilf@iastate.edu.
