As crop production plans are adapting to the declining water levels in the Ogallala Aquifer, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension explains how cotton is playing an increasingly important role in water conservation in the Northern High Plains region of Texas.

A recent two-day summit about preserving the crucial aquifer drew officials from several states, but the real-life hard work of addressing low adoption of water-saving practices like no-till and precision technology still lies ahead.

No-tiller Annie Dee, of the Dee River Ranch, operates a 10,000-acre row crop and cattle farm with her family near Aliceville, Ala. In addition to using cover crops in their no-till practices, they also have built a reservoir as part of a water conservation effort. Avoiding soil disturbance and keeping crop residue on the field are crucial in preserving water resources growing crops profitably.
