Support, Training Keys to Curing Precision Pain Points

Five no-tillers and strip-tillers share their experiences on current challenges and goals to improve productivity with farm technology.

While no-tillers are being more conservative with machinery, seed and fertilizer purchases during the ag economy downturn, precision technology is one area where they’re increasing their investment.

This is supported by No-Till Farmer’s 8th Annual No-Till Operational Benchmark Study, which revealed an 82.6% spending increase by no-tillers on precision technology in 2015 compared to 2014.

This penciled out to an average of $6,331 per farm, or approximately $5.50 per acre, spent on precision-farming technology — nearly triple the $2,674 that no-tillers had initially forecasted in last year’s benchmark study.

But with increasing dependence on technology comes a broader need for reliable support, education and training to maximize no-tillers’ return on their precision investment. It’s increasingly common for farmers to develop a network of precision support that can include a combination of their equipment dealer, precision specialist, crop consultant and input retailer.

Putting all the pieces of a precision puzzle together can be challenging. So No-Till Farmer interviewed five no-tillers and strip-tillers to get their candid perspective on the level of technology support they expect, where improvement is needed and what their biggest pain point is with precision technology.
