There are 17 essential plant nutrients that the soil and air must supply to your no-till crops. And every time you harvest a crop, you remove levels of all of these nutrients. With time, Ray Ward says the soil will not be able to supply all of the essential plant nutrients, especially as yields increase. The fertility expert and owner of Ward Laboratories in Kearney, Neb., suggests that besides nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, there are several lesser known nutrients you should carefully examine.
Adequate levels of sulfur, zinc, manganese and boron are often lacking in no-till fields, and Ward says chloride may be deficient in some areas of the Great Plains. You’ll learn how to balance your no-till soils’ nutrient levels through soil testing and a sampling of early to midseason plant tissues, especially when the crop appears to be abnormal.
