Within the Corn Belt of the U.S., subsurface drainage systems have been important and essential in the development of current ag production systems, says Matt Helmers. The Iowa State University ag engineer says how water is managed relative to subsurface drainage not only impacts crop production, but can also impact the quality and quantity of water leaving fields.

Helmers will help no-tillers understand how subsurface drainage implementation, design and management may impact crop production and water. Plus, he will discuss how subsurface drainage works, how drainage design relative to drain sizing and spacing may impact crops and how new techniques for drainage design and implementation may provide both yield and water-quality benefits.
