The region where John Wallace works has seen quite aggressive cover crop adoption over the years, in part because of efforts to improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay. The Penn State University assistant professor of weed science spends much of his time researching how conservation techniques like interseeding cover crops can help farmers deal with weed management challenges.

For this No-Till Farmer podcast, associate editor Sarah Hill caught up with John to discuss his thoughts on how best to get covers established in row crops. He explains how available equipment, herbicide programs and fertility management affect interseeding decisions. Listen in to hear why he prefers to use a high-clearance grain drill at the V4 growth stage in corn, residual herbicides and how they affect cover crops, how genetics, environmental conditions, and management choices impact cover crop establishment and more.
