Profitable Cover Crop Strategies
Cover crops are the one practice Jamie Scott, a Pierceton, Ind., no-tiller and former president of the Indiana Assn. of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, would never give up on his farm. No-tilling since the 1980s and later expanding his 1,500-acre corn, soybean, wheat and hay operation’s rotation with cover crops, Scott maintains covers are the way to boost long-term profits while achieving soil health goals. It’s advice he also implements on the 100,000 acres of cover crops that he touches in Indiana and Michigan through cover crop seed sales and seeding operations. In this classroom, Scott, a past recipient of the conference’s Best Presentation Award, discusses key cover cropping strategies that he’s identified.
