Survey: Farmers Reduce Tillage to Offset Rising Energy Costs

Some farmers are cutting back on tillage in an attempt to offset rising energy costs, according to the latest Ag Economy Barometer survey from Purdue University.
32% of total respondents said they implemented changes in their operation in response to rising energy prices.
Of those who made changes, 44% said they reduced tillage, while 24% reduced nitrogen rates and 10% started no-tilling.

Purdue’s Ag Economy Barometer, released on the first Tuesday of each month, is a nationwide measure of the health of the U.S. agricultural economy. Data comes from a survey of 400 agricultural producers, according to the university.
